Eva Machková was born March 12, 1931 in Prague, but she grew up in Mladá Boleslav. Her father was a technical clerk in the Škoda car factory in Mladá Boleslav. The family lived i Mladá Boleslav during the Second World War and in May 1945 Eva witnessed the bombing of the city as well as its liberation by the Red Army. After graduation from grammar school she began studying law, but soon after she transferred to the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) where she then studied theatre studies. She also started a family at that time. After the birth of her son she worked in the theatre in Mladá Boleslav, but this experience convinced her she did not wish to work in a theatre anymore. After her return to Prague she worked in the Theatre Institute for a short time and in 1961 she found employment in the Central House of People’s Art Creativity (ÚDLUT) where she continued working for twenty-seven years. In 1964 she began a long-distance study of pedagogy and she graduated in 1970. In ÚDLUT she worked as an expert methodologist and she organized presentations and seminars (Jirásek’s Hronov, Šrámek’s Písek, Puppeteers’ Chrudim, Žďár nad Sázavou, Theatre Summer in Kaplice). She established the theoretical foundation for drama in education as an independent field and she raised a number of experts, practical teachers as well as theoreticians. In the 1990s she was one of the founders of the Department of Drama in Education at DAMU. Eva Machková is now retired, but she is still active in teaching and publishing.
