“Someone said in the pub he knew where partisans were hiding. Although nothing came out of it, he was seen as a traitor. Even [Rudolf] Pohl was arrested as a traitor of the Czech nation, led along the street. In front of the school he was interrogated and slapped. Then he was taken to Petrovická road and shot. I arrived when he was dead already, crouched in the ditch. But my brother was there before me and he said he saw his hat jump when they shot him. Such as rather bad end.”

“I was about six and many soldiers and civilians arrived in our living room. My mum was just kneading the dough for bread and walked the room. She always baked about eleven loaves. The soldiers and others came in to check what corn we have in our granary. We were allowed to keep enough corn for sowing and then allocated version per person. Everything else had to be submitted to the authorities. The authorities thought that my dad had everything in order so they sent the control to us. My father had everything neatly divided in heaps, with labels stating the weight. When they weighed everything, they found only a deviation of 50kg. They said this was due to the fact that the sacks were still wet after washing. That’s why there was this deviation, but there was no problem. It had lucky ending. The town’s secretary said after the war that my father should be rewarded, since he saved the village, as the inspections found nothing.”

"My father described to me the difference between the end of WW1 and WW2. During the end of WW1, the general mood was joyous, everyone cheered, people danced. At the end of WW2, people very shooting and plotting revenged from one to the other. Germans were also humans, weren't they? When my uncle, who lived in Horna Dobrouc, housed some fugitives because there were transports, they had to place these fugitives somewhere, so they placed them with some Czechs, they hid in their barn. And the German supervisor told my uncle, who spoke German, that he longed for the end of the war, he was a teacher and longed to be able to return to teaching."

"They came to us one night, I don't know how many cars there were - two or three, I don't know. My brother was in the car, they didn't let him go, he was sitting in the car. They came to us looking for anti-state leaflets. But no one dealt with it in our country, there were none of us. We had a wooden room and a small one next to it. We didn't have a library, but there were planks around the ceiling, and there were all the books we had, even calendars, everything was stored under the ceiling on those planks. And in the morning everything was thrown on the ground, everything shuffled. Dad was taken to Pardubice, he was gone for two days. He was sick. As he rode his horses at the collective farm, his bike hit his heels and tore the skin on his heels, so he walked badly. He was under investigation in Pardubice, and when they wrote a report with him, he said that it occurred to him that he would read it after himself, to check what he said. And when he read it, he said, 'But it wasn't like that!' And they told him, 'We can adjust it as we need.' So when he realized what is the situation, he understood he needs to sign it to be allowed to return home."
